Which expressions represent the distance between the two points? The number line shows two points with coordinates negative 11 and positive 7. A. |–11 – 7| B. |–11 + 7| C. |7 – (–11)| D. –11 – 7 and can you explain how you do it pleas?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

That is unnecessary.

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

thx captin odvious mathgodforu

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

@randomecorner , can a distance be negative?

OpenStudy (ageta):

B. |–11 + 7|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reverse smart one

OpenStudy (ageta):

ur welcome

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

ok thx

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

It is not B guys

OpenStudy (ageta):

than what

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

well, why don't we figure it out comes to mind

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so @randomecorner, can a distance be negative is my first question?

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

yes

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

Why do you think that?

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

because the negitive side of the number line

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok, so first concept, a distance cannot ever be negative. a change in location can, but a distance is usually represented with an absolute value so that it will not be negative

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

oh

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

ok

OpenStudy (ageta):

so which one is it.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so now, if you draw a number line for me, we will now demonstrate what the answer is

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

can you draw a number line and label -11 and 7?

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

d

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

please we can work through the problem, draw the number line please

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

ya |dw:1417655279338:dw|

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

sorry i was taking a while

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

where is zero?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

it's ok

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

its 6 lines over

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

uhm, if I redraw, try it on mine?

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

ya ok im sorry i just joined this website not to long ago

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

|dw:1417655552095:dw|

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

it's cool :)

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

:3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so each line is one unit away, can you count the distance between the points?

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

19

OpenStudy (randomecorner):

right?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

I may have drawn an extra line, you should get 18

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok so now, if you were to choose B, -11+7, what does that equal?
