how did high interest rates affect savings and loans in the 1980s

People who had money liked the idea of getting a higher return but people borrowing money didn't want to pay that much for a loan. S&Ls had to pay out but weren't necessarily making enough to cover. Lot's of S&Ls went out of business. Most that survived changed their names and became banks.
