MEDAL AND FAN !! IN EXTREME NEED OF HELP !! Given the function g(x) = 4x - 5, compare and contrast g(2) and g(-4). Choose the statement that is true concerning these two values. The value of g(2) is larger than the value of g(-4). The value of g(2) is smaller than the value of g(-4). The value of g(2) is the same as the value of g(-4). The values of g(2) and g(-4) cannot be compared.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on I will try to help.... just give me a minute

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you there????

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

i'm here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, are you having trouble figuring out what the problem is asking you to do?? What part of the problem is confusing you???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

the whole thing - it makes no sense to me whatsoever. if possible, i would like to have this explained to me, so that i'll be able to answer questions like this by myself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Absolutely!

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

alright, thanks ! where do we start ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, the equation is g(x)=4x - 5 The problem asks us to solve the equation as g(2) They are secretly giving us the value of "x" so when you see "x" you would replace it with 2 With me so far???

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

yeah, okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if we replace the "x"s with 2's what is the equation now?

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

g(2) = 4(2) - 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great job! now, you can ignore the "g(2)" part. Just focus on the problem on the right hand side. Now what is the solution?

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

well, if we do it how i think we do, we start with 4(2), which is 8, and then subtract 5, which means we have 3.. so it's 3 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! that is the first part of the problem! good job! now onto the second half of the problem

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

g(-4) = 4(-4) - 5, if i'm correct ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YES!

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

cool ! so it would be 4(-4) first ? that's -16, if i'm right. and subtracting 5, and that makes -21 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are a natural!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now you have your answers 3 and -21 . The problem gave you some questions and they want you to choose the right one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the value of g(2) smaller than the value of (g-4)??

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

i don't think so, because it's positive, but i could be wrong...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No no, you are right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the value of g(2) is the same as the value of g(-4).?

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

No, it's not. so it would be A, then ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! Congrats!

OpenStudy (kidthatbro8):

oh, thank you, thank you ! you've really helped me today !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem!
