Ivan made it so the expansion of the service class, many princes and other members of the elite had to answer to the tsar and no longer rivaled him for power. Ivan set up the example for the absolute and all powerful tsar, establishing clearly that Russia had completely broken away from its days as a Mongol colony. Ivan's example that would be emulated (minus sociopathic tendencies) by such great Russian leaders as Peter the Great and Catherine the Great.
