How do u tell if a line is linear or nonlinear

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If it's completely straight, then it is linear. Otherwise, it is nonlinear.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The easiest way I can think of for knowing the difference between linear and nonlinear is the exponent value on the variable x. That is if you're referring to linear/non-linear equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Linear is straight. Non-linear is not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. a line has the same rate of change. (unlike exponential functions) Like a line is more like a function of a store selling ice cream, exponential increase is more like a population growth. An exponential decay is more like a velocity function of a ball, when it gets dropped from some height gaining less and less of the previous height each time. Line is straight. Same slope.in a form of y=mx+b (m or b, can be zero or negative 2, this results in a variety of possibilities of what an example of a line can be)

(when I said 2, in my parenthesis, I meant too, not a number 2.)
