An atom is the smallest substance that makes up the element, and has the same characteristics of that element, and the element is the pure substance that is made up of those atoms.

Elements cannot be simplified, and are made of of atoms. And it's obvious that everything contains matter.

Uhhh... not quite.  Elements CAN be simplified (into subatomic particles), and elements are not MADE of atoms, rather elements ARE the atoms.  Hydrogen is an atom with 1 proton and it is an element.  Lithium is also an atom but with 3 protons and 3 neutrons, and it is an element.
