I used to play the cello. So here are some tips. Get a cello stop. This will let you practice on floors that are not carpet and your cello won't slip. A bow of course. Don't ever bounce it on the ground like a walking stick -if that makes any sense at all. There is a knot that keeps all of the horse hair in the bow and when you bounce it or tighten your bow, this will make the horse hair fall out of the bow. When you're done practicing, loosen your bow and put it in the case. Rosin. If you try to play your cello without rosin, you won't hear anything at all. You need to put rosin on the bow so you can actually hear the notes. A rag. Just so you can clean your instrument. A tuner. My favorite type of tuner is the one that tunes by the vibration of your instrument, rather than the sound. https://www.google.com/shopping/product/14113134711628024945?q=vibration+tuner&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.81449611,d.cGU&biw=1455&bih=705&tch=1&ech=1&psi=n8ODVOGoGdS3ogSt2ICAAg.1417921441570.3&prds=paur:ClkAsKraX2cn5NxJQS91ouSMqtFxM4POsCL2kEK6CchwZqAG4MK0pP5K2AZKpX6-B-6z0izCVIe02p0TQqWZfQEnYk-rVOcHO_D1Nd4HEiri8zh2tUKv9EpAMRIZAFPVH73XTek7Krz8rsZALSoWnd-uRKqx-g&ei=ocODVP6DJoa5ogSLkIDICQ&ved=0CNEDEKYrMBQ <----This is the one I use and it works great. This is optional but I found that it helped a lot. Its a book that teaches you and gives you exercises that you can do. http://www.kjos.com/detail.php?division=4&table=product&prod_id=100CO

P.S, @poopsiedoodle, it doesn't really make a difference to sound. Its just looks.
