2x^2+x-3 Factor
What you can do when a>1 is do the borrow payback method. Multiply a by c. x^2+x-6=0 Factor that to (x-2)(x+3) Now plug back a into the factors (2x-2)(2x+3) Divide the first one by 2. (x-1)(2x+3)
general equation ax^2 + bx + c = 0 what are the factors of a*c that add up to b
I'm only assuming she doesn't know how to factor it when a>1. But anyways, if a=1, then follow @triciaal
thank you!!
Welcome. Any other questions?
would you know how to do this f(x)=x^4+4x^3+3x^2-2x-6 Use SYNTHETIC DIVISION and remainder theorem to find f(4)
Hmm, never heard of those. But wouldn't mind learning it, which I probably could in 20ish minutes
I'll give it a try.
well i wouldnt want to make you do that ha
Nah, I don't mind. Unless someone else can explain it. I want to learn too, lol.
f(4) means to let x = 4 in the polynomial
but every one equals 256
when f(x) = 0 then x is a factor when f(x) is not 0 you have a remainder
example f(0) for this problem = -6 hint the constant is -6 so the factors will be factors of 6 1,2,3, 6
also need to check the sign f(x) + + + - - no no yes no possible one positive real f(-x) + - + + - yes yes no yes possible three negative
I'm still not really sure what to do
f(4) (4)^4 + 4(4)^3 + 3(4)^2- 2(4)-6 = divide the function by x^2 to get x^2 + 4x + 3 remainder -2x-6 factor this quadratic (x+3)(x + 1) remainder is -2(x + 3)
why divide by x^2?
x^4 should be 4 factors x^2 will give a quadratic to factor need to get the official reason to answer you better
what do I put for f(4)=? then ?
f(x)=x^4+4x^3+3x^2-2x-6 Use SYNTHETIC DIVISION one factor is (x + 3)
