help please, trigonometry.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

@Jhannybean if you can help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if I wanted to find the value of x in each of those triangles, I would actually end up using the same trig function for all 3. Do you know which trig function I would use?

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

TOA or T = O/A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its the second one

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

I know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tan80=x/3 3tan80=17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that make sense?

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

yes, but I was hoping to figure out which is the adj. and opp. when the triangles are put at an angel like these.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

*angle

OpenStudy (aum):

The hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle and you can ignore it for the tangent formula which is opposite / adjacent. There is one angle, other than the 90 degree angle, that is given in each triangle. The side opposite to the given angle is the opposite and the other one (not the hypotenuse) is the adjacent angle.

OpenStudy (aum):

*adjacent side* (not angle).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

adj is the closest the the relative angle, and opp is opposite the relative angle

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

so the adj's would be 12, 3 and 4?

OpenStudy (aum):

Yes!

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (aum):

And the opposite is x for all 3 triangles.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

okay, thank you two so much for the help, wish I could give 2 medals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no prob

OpenStudy (aum):

yw. Give medal to Thefaceless.

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (sagewilson):

np, I'm gonna close this topic
