Well, usually you don't eat soup in the summer, and soup is hot and so is the summer so I'd go with C. Hot. :)

I think that they are wrong because what is underlined is "even though it was the middle of summer" and it doesn't matter what time of year it is, people still eat, so they serve different kinds of food. At first glance, this question can fool many people, but rereading it does the trick. :)
