Hey there! Welcome to OpenStudy:) In the early atmosphere oxygen was absent and thus the atmosphere was reducing in nature. Primitive life was anaerobic in nature and it was only due to oxygenic photosynthesis by BGAs which brought oxygen into the atmosphere later.
