I think it is mess, because when you put mess in a sentence it just sounds informal.

Whereas mes, yhu could say disaster or something like that~

Ex: "Pick Up This Mess!"
Ex: "May you please pick up that shovel and hand it to me?" Shovel is used formal here.

I am having trouble with this because " mess " sounds informal....but so does " shovel our way out ". However, it is asking for one word...so I have to say " mess"
