In George Washingtons farewell address he told the nation to maintain commercial but not political ties to other nations and to enter no permanent alliances. Close ties with Great Britain would go against this. George Washington set the precedent of two terms in office so the first one would follow his precedent. George Washington also advocated for unity in politics and lamented the existence of factional divisions among his countrymen. George Washington was around when the compromise pertaining to the First Bank of the United States moved the capital to D.C.
