Spring scales are mainly used to mainly used to measure the weight of an object.

Attached is a picture of a spring scale. See the hook at the bottom? The object being measured would be hung from the hook, pulling the spring down a little or a lot, depending on the weight of the object. The scale has numbers on it to tell you how heavy the object is.
