Explain the atmospheric process that creates the greenhouse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Sun is the main source of energy. Obviously the Earth emits radiation as well. If the Sun's energy is able to reach the surface of the Earth, it will either be reflected or absorbed. If it is absorbed, some of it will be re-emitted by the Earth. If it is reflected, then it just heads back into the atmosphere. So you have the Earth radiating energy and energy from the Sun getting reflected off the surface. All of the energy ends up in the atmosphere. Due to greenhouse gases being in the atmosphere, this energy will be absorbed in the atmosphere. Ultimately, the greenhouse effect is just the cumulative partial confinement of energy within the atmosphere and environment of the Earth.
