"the Lord of the Flies" is what Simon ends up calling the severed pig's head. So, calling the book Lord of the Flies brings the boys' violence front and center. Now let's break it down. "Lord" is a word of power, and the desire for power drives the book's central conflict. "Flies," on the other hand, symbolizes death and decay. Put them together, and you've got death and decay tied up with power and corruption!!! In a way, both the paratrooper and the pig's head represent the beast. Also note that the pig's head was put on the stick by Jack, who committed an act of evil, of being a beast, by killing the mother pig. The paratrooper is the ironic "sign" that the boys receive from the adult world. It is showing that the beast exists, not only on the island, but out in the rest of the world as well, in the form of evil inside of people. The paratrooper crashes as a result of fighting overhead, because of the war that is going on. Lord of the flies is the beast inside humanity and all the evil things we do. Simon and Piggy both represent positive qualities of humanity and the beast is ironic because they think its so bad but humans are the real beast. Simon's encounter shows that the boys will become savages.
