when you are exposed to sunlight for a long time, your skin, which in otherwise appears normal, gets heavily tanned. what could be the reason

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exposure to the sun's UV rays increases the production of melanin pigment in your body. Over a period of time, repeating this process will result in a buildup of protective cells on your skin - your body's response to the harmful UV rays. This buildup of cells takes time - several hours to begin working, and is the reason why a person cannot get a tan in only one day (unless you are exposed for a very long time and get sun burned).
