In a double helix, what holds the two DNA strands together?

Hydrogen bonds occur between nitrogenous bases. In DNA the complementary base pairs are Adenine to Thymine, and Guanine to Cytosine. The phosphate and sugars are the DNA's backbone and are held together by phosphodiester bonds which are covalent.
