"Cognitive Dissonance" is where we believe in two different things that don't fit together. So, we change our mind about one of those things. I'll give you a really simple example. David is a Republican. He believes that Democrats are bad people, with poor values. David has a huge crush on Jen. Jen is a Democrat. David doesn't WANT to believe that Jen is a bad person. Because he likes her a lot. So, David changes his mind, and says, "Maybe Democrats aren't so terrible." ----- You see? On one hand, David believes that Democrats are bad. But on the other hand, David likes Jen. And Jen is a Democrat! This makes David feel really uncomfortable, because he likes Jen. SO....David changes his mind about Democrats. Now, he doesn't feel so weirdly uncomfortable anymore.
