Im taking a manderin chinese class and quite a bit of my assignments require me to type in chinese symbols but I dont know how to.What controls on a computer keyboard do i use?

Go to Google Translate. Now hang on, don't think this is cheating, because here's what you do:
Click "Chinese" as the input language, and then you'll see a set of options below it in the typing box. One of them will show the Chinese character "拼", then another list of options will show, asking whether you'd like a simplified or traditional character keyboard. Choose which suits you, and in the input box you can type the pinyin (for example: mao, zhong, wo) and it will convert it to a character. :)
