Negative space  is the space that surrounds an object in focus of any artworks. This helps improves the mood of the artwork that the artist wanted to express to the viewers. According to my typography class, one of the important elements of designing is the negative space because it enhances the message that the words/letters are saying. I'm just not sure about the negative space of other type of arts.

Therefore, it is right that this question should be in the design section. Just saying.
