A biologist conducted an experiment on two islands (A and B) of similar size, climate, species composition, and richness. Originally, the same species of snake was present on both islands. In her experiment, the biologist removed the species of snake from island A but NOT from island B. She then recorded the number of animal species on each island over a period of 24 months. The data collected is shown in the graph below:

Analyze the data above in terms of interspecific relationships and communities and propose an explanation for the difference in species present on each island over the course of the experiment.

I am not good at biology, esp not in terms of solving these graphs... I think though, that the food chain has been broken, that's why the species begin to dissapear.

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How is this? Because the biologist removed the species of snake from island A but NOT from island B the communities of both species didn't have much interspecific relationships (competing for resources), thus, species B had more resources to use (i.e. living space, food, water, etc.).

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

by both species you mean, 1)snakes and 2)other animals ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, both species of snake.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you didn't mention 2 species of snake in your questions, did you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops, yeah, nevermind.
