Consider the following claim and counterclaim.

Claim: Students should spend a year doing volunteer service before starting college or a career.

Counterclaim: College and job training are expensive enough without adding a year of unpaid service.

Use the claim and counterclaim to create a thesis statement for a strong argument paper.

Which side are you taking?

i agree with the counterclaim

Okay, so your thesis will probably be along the lines of: "Due to the expensive nature of life as a student and the many obligations students face, it is unreasonable for students to spend a year doing unpaid work."
