OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u divide out the r?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Hey Elizabeth :) We want to convert to polar using these:\[\Large\rm \color{orangered}{x=r \cos \theta}\]\[\Large\rm \color{royalblue}{y=r \sin \theta}\] So we plug in the stuff,\[\Large\rm \color{royalblue}{y}=3\color{orangered}{x}+2\]\[\Large\rm \color{royalblue}{r \sin\theta}=3\color{orangered}{r\cos\theta}+2\]Subtract the cosine term to the other side,\[\Large\rm r \sin \theta-3 r \cos \theta=2\]Factor an r out of each term, (I'm assuming this is the step that was maybe confusing you),\[\Large\rm r(\sin \theta-3\cos \theta)=2\]Then divide by the stuff,\[\Large\rm r=\frac{2}{\sin \theta-3\cos \theta}\] Mmm k? :)
