How was the slave trade in the 1500's different from the previous slave trade? How did the middle passage effect its passengers?

The Middle Passage basically put the Slaves in very small rooms and had them lay down while they were chained/shackled. It caused many deaths and an outbreak of disease and in a rare case, riots.
