The Allies had defeated the Germans in North Africa. The knew that they could not invade into France or Germany at this time. They wanted to attack Italy and force it out of the war, which is what happened. Also, Churchill called Italy the "soft underbelly" of Europe. He thought the Allies could land in Italy and advance all the way to Vienna in just a few months.
