Found this online : The Muslim population of British Indian feared that an undivided,independent India would see the British Raj replaced with a Hindu one,in which Muslims would have no more independence or freedom than they had had under the British.Muslim leaders in India therefore agitated for a separate independent Muslim state if India was granted independence.

The British agreed with them,so India was partitioned along religious lines,the Muslim majority area of the country being given separate independence as the country of Pakistan.What was East Pakistan seceded in 1971 to become the independent (Muslim) state of Bangladesh.
