A model predicts the profit, p of a company as p(x) = x3 – 3x2 – 16x + 48, where p is in thousands of dollars and x is number of years passed since January 1, 2011. For which time interval would the company make a loss?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

and what about other question, on polynomial function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh i got the answer : )

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

ok! you have to solve this inequality: p(x) = x3 – 3x2 – 16x + 48<0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats all those question mark ?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

sorry I don't understand you last question!

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

anyway, please note that, your polynomial can be factorized as below: \[(x-3)(x-4)(x+4)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got that answer too !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but after that what would i do

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

please, you have to solve the inequality above, namely: \[(x-3)(x-4)(x+4)<0\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-infinity,-4) u (3,4)

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

yes!, even if the interval which is our answer is (3,4) because time has to be positive
