Okay, draw a picture, the printed area is on the inside, and the margins mark the outside. You need to decide which side the margins need to go on to minimize the area, either you'll be adding 8 to the length and 4 to the width or vice versa.

im pretty sure i know how to do optimization, but for some reason, i cant seem to get the right answer, so i think my formulas might be off somewhere. 

& how did you get 8 or 4?
