what is time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Time is the flow of the universe towards ever increasing entropy... that's the best we've got so far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

according to einstein, what is time?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

According to Einstein... time is just one part of the multi-dimensional world we live in. Just like how you are used to 3 dimensions of space (left right, up down, forward backward), it turns out that in reality time is yet another dimension of reality. Space-time he called it, and he essentially showed the math to prove that the two really are one and the same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is, space and time are essentially the same thing expressed in different ways.

Isn't it absolutely unbelievable?? :D Amazing stuff has been discovered about our universe, I've learned to appreciate just how ridiculous (but true) our existence really is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by ridiculous im thinking insignificant...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you know about his perception on death?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Insignificant? A rather strong choice of words don't you think... I do wonder what could possibly be more significant than figuring out how the universe around you works....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have I misunderstood your initial comment? If so I apologize. And no I am not familiar with what he thought of death. What did he say?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i dont know it was a question. No I am saying that we are so insignificant compared to the real world out there... ok so another question how does the theory of relativity relate to time?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha ok now I understand, yes this is very true we are nothing compared to the grand scheme of the entire universe. But this should not discourage us from learning just a little bit more each day about what's around us! And in fact, though we are quite insignificant, we've come a long way in understanding how things work! We used to think that everything revolves around us because people a long time ago would look up and see the stars and sun and planets rotate around us... how wrong we were! With careful observations we've been able to realize that not only does earth rotate around the sun, but that the sun actually rotates around the center of our galaxy! And that galaxies are not rotating one another but are actually pushing each other apart as if gravity reverses direction at large scales.... it goes on and on what we've been able to figure out. Fascinating and funny things this universe does :) On to your question however, Einstein realized that if you were sitting on a train platform and a ultra fast bullet train passed by, to you it would seem that time passes strangely for the people inside the train! The faster the train, the slower the time seems to pass for the people inside! But if you were a person ON the train... you wouldn't notice any difference whatsoever. In other words, different observes will experience the same event differently! And BOTH would be correct. Now that's just crazy you might say, but this effect has been confirmed over and over and is a very real thing. The faster you move, the slower time ticks for you. So if you want to stay young, run really really fast :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will take that advise :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so... what did einstein say about now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

About now? What do you mean exactly?
