Sorry I only half-read the question. I was busy helping someone in math. I didn't see "the ways of the wild" In that case it is DEFINITELY cubs Ways of the wild is the Direct Object
an indirect object is a noun phrase referring to someone or something that is affected by the action of a transitive verb. I believe the indirect object should be the cubs
