The tar on the raceway had softened in the heat, and the convection currents, the bleary-eyed mirages, fluttered like curtains over the black streets. As the crowd began to settle, the drivers brought the cars onto the tracks and ran them through their paces. Lap after lap, the cars performed beautifully, gleaming like rainbow-colored candies in the daylight.
