Buis believed in doing things gradually. He thought that the African Americans should "pull themselves from their bootstraps" and through living as great, American citizens who are moral and hardworkers--through all this they could earn their citizenship and rights. 
Washington believed in massive extreme campaigns. Even if violence was necessary.
