Why r phytoplankton are only found at the surface of ocean water?

Also the phytoplankton are found only at the top of the ocean because they do photosyentesis which requires sunlight so they are only found in the surface.

Because they need sunlight and because they do a process called photosynthesis which converts light into energy :)
