Why were taxes an ongoing source of conflict for the American colonists?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The source of the anger was "taxation without representations" the colonists did not a voice in the British Parliament so they could be taxed having say in the matter. They believed that they should be able to govern themselves. The British, on the other hand, felt that it was only fair that the colonists pay taxes because the British had spend tons of money protecting the colonists from the French and Indians during the French and Indian War.

The colonists began to feel that their legislatures should also have the powers that the British Parliament had.
