Why was Ngo Dinh Diem's regime so unpopular in South Vietnam?

He showed favoritism toward Catholics, which upset South Vietnam's large Buddhist majority. He handed out top government jobs to members of his family. His land policies favored wealthy landowners at the expense of the peasants. His security forces tortured and imprisoned his political opponents. As you can see, he was a pretty messed-up guy. But, he wasn't a Communist, so America loved him.
