For the data in the table, does y vary directly with x? If it does, write an equation for the direct variation. (Hint: you need to find the “k” value)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The table: X | Y 20 | 2 30 | 10 40 | 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

On the answer key, it says that Y doesn't vary with X but what I'm not understanding is why Y doesn't vary with X. Because from looking at the table, X increases by 10 and Y increases by 8. And 8/10 could be simplified.

@Nnesha

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

@Answers101 solve again for the values of K , if they are not on the same trend, they do not vary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm just not understanding how Y does not vary with X.

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

when x rises , y should rise also and vice versa, if x is the same, y should also be the same. Applies to all direct variation. Solving for K for each values of x and y will give you a conclusion wether it varies or not, just like what we did before.

Nnesha (nnesha):

its not because you are not getting answer whenever you divide or multiply

Nnesha (nnesha):

same**

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

which prooves my point :)

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

Dont just look on what you see in the table, solve for the value of K! :)

Nnesha (nnesha):

|dw:1418584212217:dw| equation now you have to find k so solve this equation for k

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

@Nnesha you mean, divide both sides by " x "

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought that in this problem, Y would equal 8/10x ??

Nnesha (nnesha):

yes i meant by x thanks

Nnesha (nnesha):

|dw:1418584366785:dw|

Nnesha (nnesha):

and simply way is when you multiply x and y values you are not getting same answer that's why its not

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

@Answers101 where did you get 8/ 10 that is the value of k right ?

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

@Nnesha ^^ agreed

Nnesha (nnesha):

nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 8/10 from looking at the table, X increases by 10 and Y increases by 8..

OpenStudy (yamyam70):

@Answers101 dont look at the table , solve for the value of K.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought that when you look at the table that is how you solve for the value of K.

Nnesha (nnesha):

if you want to solve for k |dw:1418584697801:dw|
