So Im not 100% but I believe its a virus trying to replicate itself  by combining its DNA with another cell?

This is a GMO it takes a gene of a cell, adds a new DNA, puts it back in the cell, the cell produces more of that gene. That is the dumb version if you want a more scientific response ask.
