why are producers important to a energy chain

Producers are at the root of the food chain so they provide the most energy. Think about it like this (albeit its way more complicated) if there are no more plants then there are no more herbivores, if there are no more herbivores then all the carnivores would die. Google a picture for a way better idea :)
actually you might want to forget the example and just remember why they are important :) http://heightstechnology.edublogs.org/files/2011/05/Temperate-Forest-Food-Chain-2a4qqyj.jpg
