In a well-developed paragraph, identify what technique the author uses to begin the story in the above excerpt. Explain why the author would choose to begin the story in this manner. What effect does it have on the reader? Be sure to use examples from the text to support your ideas.
(Not too sure the technique) The author would write it like this for suspense. It gets the readers to wonder where he's going, will he make it, why he is going across the world. It leaves the reader with so many questions about what will happen next that they will want to read on. When a tv show says "We will find out who wins....when we come back" It makes the person watching need to wait until the show comes back on, just like what the writer does. The reader is left in suspense and the need to read on.
