13/16-1/4=? I will give a medal 17/20-2/5=? @KamiBug @Secret-Ninja

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

\[\frac{ 13 }{ 16 } - \frac{ 1 }{ 4 }\]

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Is that it?

OpenStudy (kamibug):

Remember you need common denominators. :) In the second fraction of the first problem, you can multiply the numerator and denominator by 4. :) That'll give you 13/16 - 4/16 Now just do 13-4 and keep the denominator. :) You may need to simplify.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Before you can add or subtract fractions with different denominators, you must first find equivalent fractions with the same denominator. You have to find the smallest multiple (LCM) of both numbers and rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the LCM as the denominator.

OpenStudy (chosenmatt):

yup

OpenStudy (kamibug):

For the second problem, multiply the numerator and denominator of the second fraction by 4 to get a common denominator. :) That'll give you 17/20 - 8/20 Now just do 17-8 and keep the denominator. :) You may need to simplify.

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):
