In my opinion, the theme is to tell your kids what's going on. Bruno had no idea what anything meant because his family wouldn't tell him, and look where that got him. Don't leave people in the dark. There's plenty of evidence. The man who gave them vegetables, the little boy, the men who were working, the farm outside his window etc.
