y=-3x+1 and y=-x+5

OpenStudy (matt101):

We have two equations and two unknowns, so we can solve this system! Both equations tell you what y equals, so we can actually set them equal to each other. In other words: -3x + 1 = -x + 5 Now let's gather the x's on the left and the constants on the right: -2x = 4 Now we can easily find x by dividing both sides by -2: x = -2 We have x, so we can just plug this number into either of our original equations to find y. I'll use the first one: y = -3(-2) + 1 = 7 So for this system of equations, x = -2 and y = 7
