I'm assuming you mean author's purpose, in which case it means the reason that the author has written the story/essay/poem/etc. The author's purpose usually falls into one of three categories: to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. An example of a piece written to persuade would be an essay titled "Why You Should Stop Eating Fast Food." An example of a piece written to inform would be a paper titled "The Evolution Of The Antelope." An example of a paper written to entertain would be a story called "The Adventures Of Bob Supersonic, Savior Of The Universe." Does this help? :)
