use the formula z = (x-mu)/sigma
mu = 44 (population mean) sigma = 8 (population standard deviation
raw score: x = 46 z-score: z = unknown (for now)

it's probably better to convert to decimal notation so you can use a table when it comes to looking up areas under the curve
