Role of the Writer: Who are you as the writer? A movie star? The President? A plant? Audience: To whom are you writing? A senator? Yourself? A company? Format: In what format are you writing? A diary entry? A newspaper? A love letter? Topic: What are you writing about? For this assignment, students will assume the role of a major body organ (heart, lungs, liver, brain, stomach, kidneys, skin, etc...). The organ's audience is the human body. The format is a persuasive letter on why the organ you chose is the most important to the human body. Role of the Writer: major body organ Audience: human body Format: persuasive letter Topic: why it's the most important organ Here is a sample persuasive letter: Dear Human Body, I am the liver speaking, and I want to tell you that I'm the most important body part. I'd love to tell you why with these reasons: I can grow back; second, I work really hard to keep you clean; lastly, I do more than 500 things that are vital for your health! The first reason I am most important is if part of me or all of me gets sick or removed, I'll grow back! I'll grow back like a worm's head or a crab's leg. The next reason I am awesome is because I am like a giant chemical factory working to keep you clean. For example, I create bile to help take care of bad pollutants in your blood. The last reason why I rock and why I'm the most important body part is I do a lot to keep you clean. I kill germs, and I also keep pollution from hurting you. I remove all the dangerous chemicals and germs from your blood stream. I am THE most important and most awesome part of you because of all these reasons. Anyway, I bet the other body parts can't grow back. The Best Body Part Ever, The liver

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so what are u choosing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am thinking the Kidney

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no choose something else

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, what do you recommend?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sumanta

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe brain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay! Could you help me out on it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at 8pm wait for two hours plssssss

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:/ Do you mean wait and you will be back in 2 hours?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If so then OKAY!! :D See you then!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay. So here we go :)

OpenStudy (one098):

Have you started it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No @One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay. So I'm going to help you, but you are going to do the work ok?? So first things. Role of the Writer: Who are you as the writer? A movie star? The President? A plant?

OpenStudy (one098):

Answer that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am the Kidney

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And ok

OpenStudy (one098):

So you are a body part, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep! :D

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, next. Audience: To whom are you writing? A senator? Yourself? A company?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am writing to myself

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay. So far you are a Kidney and you are writing to yourself, great!

OpenStudy (one098):

Now, Format: In what format are you writing? A diary entry? A newspaper? A love letter?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A diary entry

OpenStudy (one098):

Perfect! So, we're getting there. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait can I write it to the human body?

OpenStudy (one098):

Sure! Even better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (one098):

So now, Topic: What are you writing about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That one im not sure on

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay. So lets say something's wrong with you aka the Kidney, ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay. Can you do some research?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I will do it know

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, so after you've done the research looking up the functions of a Kidney, look up things that can go wrong, as well. It doesn't have to be long, it can be as short as the one above, but once you have it, show me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really can't find any information

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Never mind :D

OpenStudy (one098):

Great!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I foundthis The kidneys are a pair of organs located in the back of the abdomen. Each kidney is about 4 or 5 inches long -- about the size of a fist. The kidneys' function are to filter the blood. All the blood in our bodies passes through the kidneys several times a day. The kidneys remove wastes, control the body's fluid balance, and regulate the balance of electrolytes. As the kidneys filter blood, they create urine, which collects in the kidneys' pelvis -- funnel-shaped structures that drain down tubes called ureters to the bladder. Each kidney contains around a million units called nephrons, each of which is a microscopic filter for blood. It's possible to lose as much as 90% of kidney function without experiencing any symptoms or problems.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is pretty important

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, so right there "The kidneys' function are to filter the blood" that tells you how important it really is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right

OpenStudy (one098):

So that should be somewhere near the top...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you get into this https://ca-sas.bbcollab.com/m.jnlp?sid=cm090828&password=M.BDE2E2F6B0D14863B7061E2C0FC8EF I will be able to share my screen with you and you can see the progress I have made, its also instand messaging so then we dont have to keep comingting, my teachers use it for classes since im homeschooled its super easy sto work and thats what i was thinking. somthing like Dear Human body, this is the Kidney speaking. I am here to tell you why i play a imortant role inside the human body or somthign like that :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Yeah, I'm opening it. One sec..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, so its not opening, I don't know why...

OpenStudy (one098):

Oh wait...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (one098):

Got it :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you see yellow dots keep them open :P

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, but it said Connection failed and I put Try Again but it didn't work...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aw mannnn then we can just stay in here

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay. So where were we?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

about to write the first part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Yes, sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so this is what i have so far let me coppy it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dear Human Body, This is the kidney speaking, im here to tell you why I play a very important role inside of your body.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what should i start off with @One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, so start with what we said. That is filters the blood, but elaborate.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So kinda like

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dear Human Body, This is the kidney speaking, im here to tell you why I play a very important role inside of your body. My function is to filter the blood. All the blood in the human body passes through me several times a day. I remove wastes, control the body's fluid balance, and regulate the balance of electrolytes. As I filter blood, I create urine, which collects in my pelvis -- funnel-shaped structures that drain down tubes called ureters to the bladder.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@One098

OpenStudy (one098):

Great! First paragraph, done! Now to the next. Same everything, now choose something else about the Kidney.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay like what?

OpenStudy (one098):

From the research you did, collect more information. Not about blood filtering but about something else.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I contain around a million units called nephrons, each of which is a microscopic filter for blood. It's possible to lose as much as 90% of my function without experiencing any symptoms or problems.

OpenStudy (one098):

Well that again is talking about filtering the blood, so if you'd like, add that to the first one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh ok

OpenStudy (one098):

So: Dear Human Body, This is the kidney speaking, im here to tell you why I play a very important role inside of your body. I contain around a million units called nephrons, each of which is a microscopic filter for blood. It's possible to lose as much as 90% of my function without experiencing any symptoms or problems.

OpenStudy (one098):

Like that^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant find anymroe on this article let me check somthing else

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ug I cant find ANYTHING :(

OpenStudy (one098):

Okay, let me help you.

OpenStudy (one098):

Even though I get really sick and sometimes its not able to be cured, that doesn't mean I give up. <- Next paragraph.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats awesome info! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any more about that subject?

OpenStudy (one098):

:) So now... Look here and tell me what you find. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_kidney_disease#Signs_and_symptoms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all that is about a disese

OpenStudy (one098):

Exactly, that's how kidneys get "sick"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what do you thuink i should get out of there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its all thrown around

OpenStudy (one098):

You don't have to write much, just a bit and then we'll stay on kidney's being sick, but a different subtopic. Okay. Let me see.

OpenStudy (one098):

"Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as chronic renal disease (CRD), is a progressive loss in renal function over a period of months or years. The symptoms of worsening kidney function are non-specific, and might include feeling generally unwell and experiencing a reduced appetite." This is what happens to me sometimes.

OpenStudy (one098):

Something like that.. But we will rephrase.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like instead of the kidenty put i

OpenStudy (one098):

So, we can have something like: There is something known as Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as chronic renal disease (CRD). This is obviously a disease, however the symptoms arent specific. I can make the person feel unwell and a reduce in appetite.

OpenStudy (one098):
