Okay. Original Problem: 1 3/7 * 5 4/5 = 8.28571429 Estimate: 1 1/2 * 6 = 9 So his estimate got 9, and the real solution is approximately 8.29. So did he overestimate or underestimate?

Yep, over is correct..his estimate should be closer to 8 for it to be considered a 'close estimate'.
