What was one of the main reasons Hoover lost the election of 1932? Americans felt Hoover’s reforms had not done enough to help them directly. Voters were angered by protectionist measures that inhibited foreign trade. Voters wanted a repeal of Prohibition laws of the 1920s. His opponent led a smear campaign that diminished his image in the public eye.

People blamed him for the Stock Market crash, possibly, but much of what happened afterwards, the unemployment, the bread lines, soup lines, etc. Roosevelt came along with promises for change, and he delivered. Whether Hoover was to blame or not for the Depression, I don't know, but I know there were people in my family who had been New Deal Democrats, and they virtually despised Herbert Hoover.
