In social terms, Rome was a society which afforded more rights to women than China. Both women in Rome and China could inherit property however. The legal systems also differed. Rome had an adversarial system, where the judge is nominally neutral, in contrast to the Chinese system in which the prosecutor and judge were the same person, and a defense "attorney" could not enter the trial and at most could only write the defendant's defence for him.
