Do we need to change how we give out medals? http://youtu.be/_X0mgOOSpLU
Perhaps moderators need to approve the giving out of medals.
We all need to encourage the growth of learning process and discourage the give me the answer now mindset. If we had more active moderators approving medals we could do it :-)
I was confused. http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/5491ae39e4b0efa952d3b1b6
Sorry, but that idea is too extremely far-fetched. That would have to be approving and reviewing countless question threads per day.
Bad idea
I waste d10 minutes of my life on a lady that could have talked faster and cleared up to stupid speech in 5 minutes. But no, she had to end almost every sentence "Oh, but not yet!" She doesn't understand the kids want to learn if they want to. You cant force them to. If you come to openstudy its to learn, medals are a side thing. It's like Facebook, some people compete to have more friends then the next guy, but there's always that one user who doesn't care about friends, he/she is only worried about his real friends. Sorry , I didn't explain that right. Also that idea is stupid! How are you going to hold a child back because he not finished... "yet." She is an idiot, that's why there are things known as dual course enrollment. Lets say that student failed algebra, he can move on to algebra two but still take algebra online from home. ok, back to the original topic. If you are here to for medals then you are here for helping. If you got a medal its because you helped., and the person you helped feels greatful for what you did for him/her. The point of OS is to help and to be help, an equivalent exchange of knowledge you might say. Its up to the users decision whether or not to give a medal. Like if you were to help me I would give you a medal only if you helped me, by helped I would want a detailed description and evidence to support your answer. I usually will not be satisfied with just "it's 27, medal?" So a subject like this is almost as pointless as that video. The medal system gets users engaged in learning, it inspires them to compete with there friends to see who can help the most users. So without medals, those kids that are always striving to help, wouldn't even help and move on to the competition study site. And Mod's do discourage direct answers. That's why you see so many people now, more than before, giving out detailed responses. Also mods moderate, there not teachers (although some are :P) that are in front of a computer reviewing questions one by one, that's would throw the whole system of balance with a waiting list of at least 5 days just to get 1 medal! That idea is pointless. Back to that lady who has no ide what she is talking about, (I swear there just handing out doctorial degrees, sheesh). Her system on "Not yet!", (I wanted to slap her silly every time she said this) , would be a horrible idea! It would never work for kids that are in some crazy hard classes! There's always that one subject you are destined to do bad at, but you would be unable to advance in you education just because Mrs. NotYet! wanted to make sure you knew what you were learning. She would be putting you behind everyone else and therefore you would have to work twice as hard as before just to make sure you don't fall behind, and if you do fall behind, they would blame the education system and they would move on to another one! It happens every few years!!!!! They always change programs, because the last one didn't work so this ne one might, lets waste a couple millions of dollars on student who DONT want to learn. They should be focusing on the kids that really want help, and are showing effort to improve, not focus on the majority of kids who are failing. Odd's are if your failing and you don't anything about it's because you don't care. Let me stop now, :P If you read all of that thank you. :)
Why focus on kids who are ungrateful and don't take advantage of what they have in front of them, when we could be helping the kids that risk there lives on a daily basis because they want to get an education! The billions of dollars we waste on these kids that don't care about there education we could be wasting trying to help others. But who cares right? Lets not do anything... yet!
Thank you for responding :-)
Ooh, someone's upset. But good point.
I agree taking the bottom students and bringing them to the top is unrealistic.
I read half of it. @Joel_the_boss
^ LOL
;-; @confluxepic It's the thought that counts.
But I understood it all.
Now I read it all. Or 90% of it.
We could take the medals away and your smart score will go on how many questions you answer
No. People will spam questions.
Yeeah......
I read it all, Joel.
